From Paper to Precious Metal: Crafting a Custom Stylised Roman Numeral Ring

There is something truly special about turning a client’s personal concept into a lasting piece of fine jewelry. Recently, we had the pleasure of bringing a client's unique vision to life—a custom band featuring artistic, highly stylised Roman numerals woven around the ring.

Here is a look behind the scenes at how we transformed a hand-drawn sketch into a polished, 9ct rose gold masterpiece.

Step 1: The Initial Concept & Sketch

Every custom piece starts with an idea. Our client came to us with a clear vision: meaningful dates represented through flowing, organic Roman numerals that wrapped around the band rather than standard, blocky font lettering.

They provided a detailed sketch laying out the stylized curves, flourishes, and spacing of the numerals:

Step 2: 3D CAD Modeling

To ensure perfect proportions, precise depth for casting, and a seamless flow around a circular band, we took the hand-drawn artwork into Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software.

Using CAD allowed us to translate the intricate curves from the flat paper sketch into a dynamic 3D model. We calibrated the exact thickness, ring size, and relief height so that the stylised numerals would pop while remaining comfortable for daily wear:

Step 3: Casting & Hand Finishing in 9ct Rose Gold

Once the client approved the 3D render, the CAD model was prepped for casting in 9ct rose gold. The warm tone of rose gold provides a romantic, vintage touch that beautifully highlights the sweeping curves of the custom numerals.

After casting, the ring went through expert hand-finishing—cleaning up the cast texture, contrasting the raised polished numerals against a subtle textured background, and polishing the inner band to a mirror finish.

The final result is a one-of-a-kind statement piece with deep personal significance.
